Clean-up of All five Entrance Ways

(before and after)

In May, 1987 at the WHOA meeting, it was suggested that an “award of the month” for the best yard could be promoted in order to encourage home owners to spruce up their properties and plant grass and shrubs soon after moving into their new homes.

At the time, yards were in all stages of development and some homeowners were putting off planting grass, shrubbery or flowers for a year or so.

Three people at this meeting volunteered to set in motion and organize such a program, Mrs. Holly Bunting, Mrs. Elizabeth Chamberlain and a gentleman who lasted only through the first search for the best yard.

Mrs. Brenda Snyder, employee of the Loius Wright Realty Company (not current WHOA President), as well as homeowners in The Woodlands agreed to present this program to her company and see if they would sponsor the award, which they did with a $25.00 gift certificate along with a $25.00 gift certificate from Sowell and Woodley Nursery. Holly and Elizabeth continued selecting and presenting the award even after Brenda Snyder made a career change.  In 1988 the awarding was adopted by the newly organized Woodlands Garden Club as a community service project. For a while Lowe’s presented the $50.00 gift certificate and currently Woodley’s Garden Center and Jim Post of Russell Jeffcoat Realty jointly present the $50.00 Yard of the Month Award.
